The Molecular and Cellular Medicine (MCM) option at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) has offered unique training in basic and translational research since 2013. This option emphasizes the use of cutting-edge technologies to study a wide range of diseases relevant to clinical practice.
The Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Medicine is offered in two formats:
- Accelerated program in just one year, with two 4-month internships
- Traditional program with a thesis
Internationally recognized, the IRCM is an innovative and dynamic research centre. The MCM option is offered exclusively at the IRCM, a multidisciplinary environment that includes 33 research units, 7 technology platforms, 3 research platforms, and 5 specialized research clinics.
The goal of the MCM Master’s program is to train versatile and independent students by developing their technical skills and providing the essential credits for doctoral studies. Indeed, the MCM option includes practical and theoretical courses and training modules on the use of cutting-edge technologies (flow cytometry, imaging and microscopy, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics) and introductory courses to the clinical research environment and the concepts of personalized medicine. Furthermore, the accelerated MCM option allows research credits to be distributed across two intensive rotations of four months each in two different IRCM research laboratories. This gives students a broader exposure to research disciplines and approaches and postpones the need to choose a supervisor and research topic in a more informed manner until the PhD level.
This training meets the modern requirements of molecular biology research by integrating a solid foundation in fundamental biology while translating this knowledge to benefit the clinical setting. The IRCM offers four research areas studying different aspects of human health and disease: Cancer; Immunity, Inflammation, and Infectious Disease; Cardiometabolic Health; and Genetic and Neurological Diseases.
