Les synapses chimiques sont des zones de contact entre deux neurones (cellules nerveuses) et sont essentielles au traitement de l\u2019information dans le cerveau. Elles fonctionnent en excitant et en inhibant l\u2019activit\u00e9 neuronale par l\u2019entremise des synapses excitatrices et inhibitrices respectivement. Un \u00e9quilibre dans le d\u00e9veloppement des synapses excitatrices et des synapses inhibitrices est important pour les fonctions normales du cerveau. Un d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre dans ce d\u00e9veloppement serait impliqu\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u00e9tiologie des troubles neurod\u00e9veloppementaux et neuropsychiatriques tels que l\u2019\u00e9pilepsie, l\u2019autisme et la schizophr\u00e9nie. Par ailleurs, la morphologie et la fonction des synapses changent en fonction de l\u2019activit\u00e9 et de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience synaptique. Ces changements de plasticit\u00e9 des synapses sont importants pour l\u2019apprentissage et la m\u00e9moire.<\/p>\n<p>En utilisant des m\u00e9thodes en biologie cellulaire et mol\u00e9culaire, en biochimie et en g\u00e9n\u00e9tique, mon \u00e9quipe et moi travaillons sur la caract\u00e9risation des complexes d\u2019organisation synaptique, qui sont des complexes prot\u00e9iques d\u2019adh\u00e9sion trans-synaptiques et qui peuvent d\u00e9clencher directement la formation des synapses. Nous visons \u00e9galement \u00e0 comprendre comment la modulation des complexes d\u2019organisation synaptique est r\u00e9gul\u00e9e afin de trouver de nouvelles bases mol\u00e9culaires pour la plasticit\u00e9 des synapses. Ces \u00e9tudes pourront contribuer au d\u00e9veloppement de nouvelles strat\u00e9gies diagnostiques et th\u00e9rapeutiques pour les troubles neuropsychiatriques et la dysfonction cognitive dans certaines maladies du cerveau.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"one-half  \">\n<h2>Research axis<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Protein interactions<\/li>\n<li>Development and tissue differentiation<\/li>\n<li>Neurobiology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Research description<\/h2>\n<p><i>Mechanisms of CNS synapse development and plasticity <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i>I am interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control the development and plasticity of chemical synapses in the brain. Central synapses are neuronal cell-cell adhesion sites essential for information processing in the brain by exciting and inhibiting neuronal activity as excitatory and inhibitory synapses, respectively. A balanced development of excitatory and inhibitory synapses is important for normal brain functions, and an imbalance in this development is supposed to be the etiology of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia. In addition, central synapses morphologically and functionally change in response to synaptic activity and experience. The plastic changes in synapses are important for learning and memory.<\/p>\n<p>Using cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry and genetic approaches, my team and I aim to characterize \u201csynaptic organizing complexes\u201d, which are trans-synaptic adhesion protein complexes that can directly trigger synapse formation. We also aim to uncover modulatory regulation of synaptic organizing complexes in order to demonstrate new molecular basis on synaptic plasticity.
