It is intended to establish and maintain a constructive discussion with your research supervisor to foster your development, check the progress of your project and validate the skills acquired or to be improved. At these meetings, your research supervisor will highlight your strong and weak points and discuss some issues when necessary. Then, you may take the opportunity to share your expectations and raise some concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that it is <b>your responsibility<\/b> to ensure these meetings take place and the <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Fiche-d\u00e9valuation-formative_Mai2017-R.pdf\">fiche d&#8217;\u00e9valuation formative<\/a>\u00a0is completed and submitted to the program to be added to your record.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>M.Sc. Committee (&#8220;Comit\u00e9 de parrainnage&#8221;)<\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"alt-edited\">A mentor<\/span> <span class=\"\">is assigned to each<\/span> <span class=\"\">student.<\/span> <span class=\"\">It<\/span> <span class=\"\">should be the<\/span> <span class=\"\">unit responsible<\/span> or his representative. At the beginning of your study program you should fill the <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2019\/09\/Composition-du-comit\u00e9-de-parrainage-suivi_Mai2017-R.pdf\">form<\/a> for mentor nomination. Please take note of the <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Comite\u0301-de-parrainnage-process.doc\">procedure<\/a> implemented by the Molecular Biology Programs. <span class=\"\">You should also contact your<\/span> unit representative for <span class=\"\">more information about the organisation of these committees in your research unit<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><br \/>\nAt <span class=\"\">the end of the Committee<\/span> <span class=\"\">an <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/ComitedeSuivi_Biomol2019.pdf\">evaluation grid<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"\">is<\/span> <span class=\"\">completed and<\/span> <span class=\"\">added<\/span> <span class=\"\">to your file.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Advisory or Thesis Committee<\/h2>\n<p>The goal of the advisory Committee is to assess your progress throughout your academic path. You must meet the members of the committee <strong>once a year<\/strong>. They will give you formative recommendations that will encourage your scientific development and help you complete your studies in the time required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conduct of the advisory Committee<\/strong><br \/>\nThe advisory Committee is not an exam. This is a formal meeting during which the student presents his results in 30 minutes. This presentation is followed by a period of questions and discussion on the project.<br \/>\nAt the beginning and end of the meeting, the student is invited to retire to allow the committee to discuss. In the end, the student meets again to receive the committee&#8217;s assessment and the supervisor is invited to retire to allow the student to discuss with his committee.<\/p>\n<p>At the first committee, the student presents his project, the goals, the proposed methodology to meet the objectives and the first results if available. Subsequent committees are used to present the progress made. At the last committee, also called writing committee, the student shall submit a description of the outline of his thesis before writing it.<br \/>\n<div class=\"box left  \">\n<h2>Members of the thesis committee<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chairman which must be <a title=\"Professors\" href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/la-recherche\/les-professeurs\/\">member of the programs<\/a>. This choice must be made in consultation with the responsible of the Unit ;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Your research supervisor;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 An internal or external member to your research center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The choice of the jury is in agreement with the head of your unit. You should fille the <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2019\/09\/Composition-du-comit\u00e9-de-parrainage-suivi_Mai2017-R.pdf\">Form for the nomination of the Commitee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two weeks<\/strong> before the date of your committee, you must submit to your committee, as well as your head unit, the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medecine.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2024\/05\/Periodic-Review-of-activities-Mai2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Periodic review of activities<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Detailed description of your research project and the progress of your work (<strong>4 pages maximum excluding the references, plus one page of figures, <\/strong>spacing 1.5 Font Times New Roman 12, margin 1 inch)<\/li>\n<li>Academic transcripts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, <strong>two weeks<\/strong> before the date of your committee, you must submit to the direction of the programs, your <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/Fiche-d\u00e9valuation-formative_Mai2017-R.pdf\">formative evaluation<\/a> completed.<\/p>\n<p>The organization of monitoring committees is the responsibility of the unit. Please contact the head of your unit to be aware of the internal procedure at your institution and get the form for the composition of the jury.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of committee meetings, an <a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/ComitedeSuivi_Biomol2019.pdf\">assessment grid<\/a>\u00a0will be filled in and added to your student record.<\/p>\n<p>The Faculty policy and all the forms are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/medecine.umontreal.ca\/ressources\/etudiants\/la-boussole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boussole<\/a> website, section advisory committee.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>M.Sc. Research Seminar (BIM6035)<\/h2>\n<p>The research seminar takes place near the end of your Master\u2019s program. Available dates for each trimester will be circulated by the program administration early in the session.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar consists of an oral presentation of 20 minutes followed by a question period of 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>For students in the Molecular and Cellular Medicine option, the research seminar takes place at the end of each rotation and consists of an oral presentation of 15 minutes followed by a 5-minute question period. The final evaluation is based on the two &#8220;mini-seminars&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar should introduce the question being addressed and place it in the context of what is known in the field (including hypotheses and objectives), discuss the experimental results and how they were obtained, and present some future questions and perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>Following this seminar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biomol.umontreal.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/BIM6035-Evaluation-orale_Rapport-.docx\">an evaluation grid<\/a> is filled by members of the jury.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Ph.D. Research Seminar (BIM7015)<\/h2>\n<p>The research seminar takes place towards the end of your PhD before the writing of the thesis. Available dates for each trimester will be circulated by the program administration early in the session.
